Wet and Windy in San Sebastian

Last weekend I had the pleasure of visiting Jill (fellow study abroad-er, former roommate, sorority sister, diehard KU fan, friend, and baller), in San Sebastian. I arrived late on Thursday and took a cab to her friend's apartment, where I was able to stay. Upon getting out of the cab I was absolutely ecstatic to see her! It was so great to see a familiar face since being away. The cab driver probably thought I had mental issues, as I was squealing when I got out. We had such a great weekend. It was nice to just catch up and talk in person...skype just doesn't cut it!

San Sebastian has a totally different vibe from Barcelona, but I loved it. It was very charming, and much smaller, and we enjoyed little cafes, shopping, and broke down and ate Mexican food (the Spanards' attempt at it that is). I have developed a deep love for baguettes, which we bought warm from the store for pennies and made sandwiches. We also went to a Spanish video store, which was actually just American movies dubbed over. The titles were hilarious, such as "Chicas Malas" (Mean Girls), "Una Rubia Muy Legal" (Legally Blonde), and "Colega, Donde Esta Mi Coche!" (Dude, Where's My Car!). We rented Sr. y Sra. Smith, but never ended up watching it.

On Saturday night, we went tapa bar hopping. It was actually my first time to really go out for tapas, and it was such a great experience! (and delicious). All of the menus were in Basque, the dialect spoken in San Sebastian, so we had no idea what we were ordering. Closing my eyes and pointing, I ordered what turned out to be cow mean with strawberry sorbet and chocolate on top. It was actually good! I also had oysters and some other unidentifyable items.

I came to San Sebastian at shall we say...interesting time. Torrential down pours, tornado winds, and tsunami waves graced the Spanish town. Streets were closed due to high waves and we were cautioned to not go outside due to flying debris. Good times. Maybe this will give you a better idea:
